What sort of interface/hardware that is a pre amp but doubles as a soundcard should i buy that's around 200 dollars? I have a Rode NT 1A and i'm using Acid 4.0.

Pretty much every audio interface doubles as a preamp with the exception of the audiophile series and the emu 1212m. Would really recommend saving another $100 or $200 because no audio interface at $200 is any good. You might wanna look at some of the low end M-Audio shit if ur really set on just spending $200. If you decided to save another hundred or two then go for the Presonus Firebox, Focusrite Saffire, or EMU 1820. You'd be much happier in the end.Originally Posted by NASTYROO

definetly the 1212m
Welcome to reality.
are the ones suggested better than an mbox? and can you only use an mbox with pro tools?
"Better" is a word used when expressing an opinion.. Some people would say MBOX is better but on the other hand most serious people don't want to use a usb interface, because of latency issues. If ur not simultaneously recording a large amount of tracks at one time then the mbox would be fine. To be safe I would go with one of the firewire devices listed above... If pro tools is what u wanna get into then go for an interface like the M-Audio Firewire 410 or 1814....As far as sound goes you most likely wouldnt be able to tell the difference in the quality unless you had some very very nice monitors which I doubt u do.Originally Posted by NASTYROO
E-MU is a really nice choice, but their cards seem to have alot of complications when it comes to the setup. You're gonna need at least $300 to invest in a decent soundcard/pramp combo.
E-MU 1212m and PreSonus BlueTube....$300
M-Audio FireWire 410...$300
Both are great routes to go. And when thinking of 'quality', peep out Kri's "What can an upgrade do for you" thread. A Mic upgrade along with a really nice preamp (and some good monitors, with proper mixing) can get you a wonderfully acceptable sound quality. The overall sound of the track is dependant on alot of things besides the soundcard...just peep this thread and you'll see what i mean...
(Kris has 20,000+ into his shit, so by no means am i suggesting any o fhis gear to you, i'm just giving you some food for thought for later down the road when it's needed more.)

Alright, Thanks a lot for the replys, usually it's hard to get more than a sentence out of people, really appreciate it. I'm thinkin' i'll just spend the extra hundred dollars and go with the Firewire, my friend has the same one and i like the quality he gets.
stay away from the mackie spike. a friend of mine has it and has had quite a few problems trying to get it running. he had to send his first one back and get a new one. the customer help/support has been next to nothing.
the blue tube presonus with a $100 audio card sounds quite nice. a friend of mine started using the blue tube and i was impressed with it considering the price.
